Curriculum Intent – Science
Progression of Skills and Knowledge – Science
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics – STEM
As part of the curriculum provision we promote and develop the foundations of engineering habits of the mind. The Alien learning attributes along with the teaching of processes to understand how to think like an engineer enables children to create, assess and adapt whilst developing team working skills.
We have an adapted STEM wheel for Early Years which the Year R teachers introduce to our foundation stage children. As they enter Key Stage one the wheel has more components.
The children are given a problem that they need to solve and use the STEM wheel to support their thinking and learning. They are encouraged to share ideas and learn from their mistakes, and are given time to re-evaluate and problem solve with the support of the staff.
Year R have been using pasta and playdough to make a bridge for The Naughty Bus.
Year 1 – How can we get the dinosaurs out of the ice the fastest?
Year 2 have been investigating how they can we make a stomp rocket that goes the furthest.
Year 2 have also been busy in the forest using a Stem wheel to construct a bridge that held the most weight.
